Robinson Orume | December 31, 2017

Overview

The partnership between KRCS and the Born Free Foundation focused on wildlife research, conservation education, and community livelihood interventions. The primary geographical focus of this collaboration is in Bayang Mbo Wildlife Sanctuary and Korup National Park Landscape, both located in the Southwest Region of Cameroon.

The Elephant Guardian Programme:

As a direct outcome of this partnership, the Elephant Guardian Programme has been launched. This program is designed to pilot community-based monitoring of elephant movements. It also aims to test participatory mitigation measures to address human-elephant conflicts within communities surrounding the Banyang Mbo wildlife sanctuary.

The partnership and the Elephant Guardian Programme are expected to contribute to:

  • Community-Based Monitoring: Implementing systems where local communities actively track and monitor elephant movements.
  • Human-Elephant Conflict Mitigation: Testing and evaluating strategies developed with community participation to reduce conflicts between humans and elephants.
  • Enhanced conservation efforts for elephants and their habitat.
  • Improved community livelihoods through sustainable practices.
  • Increased awareness and education about wildlife conservation.
  • Reduced human-wildlife conflict, leading to safer communities and healthier elephant populations.
